Rs 208 cr for Vizag Port, Rs 488 cr for VCIC

Visakhapatnam: TheUnion Budget has made proposals for allocation of Rs 488 crore for Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC), Rs 208 crore to Visakhapatnam Port and funding for development of infrastructure for educational institutes of national importance being developed in Andhra Pradesh.

Indian Institute of Petroleum Energy (IIPE), which is allotted 201 acres at Vangali village in Sabbavaram mandal near here for its campus, has been allotted Rs150 crore. Meagre allocation may put a question mark over plans to complete a permanent campus within next 18 months.

Central University of Andhra Pradesh, which is being operated at Anantapur has been allotted Rs 56.66 crore. This may not enable the university authorities to take up construction of a permanent campus as the amount is said to be enough to meet the rentals and other establishment expenditure.

The LPG and crude cavern in Visakhapatnam operated by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Ltd is also expected to get part of the total amount of Rs 210 crore earmarked for operating them along with caverns at Mangalore and Padur. The Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering and Research (SAMEER), an autonomous society under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, has been allotted Rs150 crore for its Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) located in Visakhapatnam.

Though Rs 6,444 crore has been earmarked for smart cities, it is not yet clear how much will be given to smart cities being developed in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and other places in the State. AP will also get Rs 1200 crore for urban water supply septage management improvement project and Rs 300 crore livelihood improvement project second phase.

In a tweet, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said "Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's announcement of five river links - Daman Ganga-Pinjal, Par Tapi-Narmada, Godavari-Krishna, Krishna-Pennar and Pennar-Cauvery - will go a long way in easing the problem of water shortage in remote and arid parts of the country."
