It has been six years since the GST regime was introduced in India, and yet some taxpayers continue to evade its provisions.
Data from the Commercial Taxes Department reveals that 23,374 taxpayers have consistently reported a turnover of less than Rs 20 lakh for over three years. Of these, 19,277 taxpayers have failed to file their returns since their registration.
In response to these discrepancies, the department has initiated a special drive starting from July 15 for 10 days.
The department's analytics, which include data from e-Way bills and transactions conducted by unregistered entities, suggest that some dealers have been using cash transactions to avoid GST compliance.
This strategy appears to be aimed at bypassing the GST framework and evading tax obligations.
The special drive will involve increased scrutiny of transactions and a crackdown on practices aimed at tax evasion.
The department plans to implement stricter measures to ensure compliance and address any discrepancies.
