Finance Minister announces 100 Sainik schools

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced qualitative strengthening of 15,000 schools in the country under the National Education Policy. While presenting her first such Union Budget since Covid-19, the Finance Minister also announced setting up of 100 new Sainik schools.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced qualitative strengthening of 15,000 schools in the country under the National Education Policy. While presenting her first such Union Budget since Covid-19, the Finance Minister also announced setting up of 100 new Sainik schools.

"100 new Sainik Schools will be set-up under partnership with Non-governmental organisations, private schools and States. Higher education under budget 2019-20, I had mentioned setting up of a Higher Education Commission in India. We would be introducing the legislation this year to implement the same. It will be an umbrella body having 4 separate standard setting, accreditation, regulation and funding," the Finance Minister said while presenting the Budget to the Parliament.

Sitharaman also announced setting up a central university in Leh. For ST and SC welfare, Sitharaman announced that the government has set aside a target of establishing 750 New Eklavya Model residential schools in tribal areas.

"I propose to increase the unit cost of each such school from Rs. 20 crores as of now to Rs. 38 crores and for hilly and difficult (terrain) areas, Rs 48 crore. This would help in creating robust infrastructure facilities for our tribal areas," the Finance Minister said.

The Finance Minister further added that the government has revamped the post metric scholarship schemes for the welfare of scheduled caste students along with enhancing the central assistance in this regard.

"We are allotting Rs. 35, 219 crores for 6 years i.e., 2025-26 to benefit 4 crore scheduled caste students."
