Visakhapatnam: MEMBERS from project displaced families of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Sunday staged a novel protest by hitting the streets in industrial areas of Gajuwaka, Kurmannapalem and Gantyada with begging bowls in protest against privatisation.

Under the banner of VSP Displaced Families' Struggle Committee, they went on a padayatra raising slogans like "Modi give our lands back," and "Visakha Ukku Andhrula Hakku." Umudi Appa Rao, a protester, said they were totally against Centre's decision to privatise Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited-the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

"For establishing the steel plant, the government had acquired over 20,000 acres with the promise that one member from each displaced family will be provided a job. However, still many families are waiting for the job promise to be fulfilled for over four decades," Visakha Steel Employees' Congress general secretary Mantri Rajasekhar bemoaned.
