Sankar Eye Hospital performs 25,012 surgeries in 2021, 3.67 lakh since inception
Sankar Foundation, which operates a super-speciality eye hospital in Visakhapatnam with a good network of eye care service providers in North Coastal Andhra has performed a record number of 25,012 surgeries during 2021 and 3.67 lakh since its inception.

It also set another record by performing the highest number of cataract surgeries in Andhra Pradesh under Dr. YSR Kantivelugu & Dr.YSR Aarogyasree Schemes. The foundation said it had performed exactly 3,67,888 surgeries since inception. The hospital charges amount to those who can afford.
In an interview, K.B.N. Manimala, Managing Trustee & CEO, Sankar Foundation told Bizz Buzz that they were benefited a lot due to continued support from the State Government . She said the government paramedical ophthalmic officers are instrumental in successful implementation of programmes like Dr.YSR Arogyasree and Dr.YSR Kantivelugu.
She said "our committed 16 full-time experienced specialists and 17 junior medical professionals in all sub-specialties are extending services to all kinds of eye ailments. Of 3.67 lakh surgeries performed so far 2.87 lakh accounting for 78 percent surgeries were done among the poor and the needy patients free of cost. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, the hospital had not only performed 25,012 eye surgeries but also contributed a major portion in successful implementation of the government schemes."
Sankar Foundation has its base hospital at Visakhapatnam which played a vital role in conducting 9,423 cataract surgeries among senior citizens during 2021 under the VVA-TATA programme in the districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram enabling Visakhapatnam securing second position in the State.
Manimala said Sankar Foundation having largest department in vitreo retina with the five most experienced specialists is extending medical retina and surgical retinal services for diabetic retinopathy, ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) and all other vision threatening diseases. The retina department of Sankar Foundation is extending its specialty services to 600-700 patients in a month and performing close to 100 surgeries apart from intra-
vitreal injections and laser procedures for diabetic retinopathy and ARMD( Age Related Macular-Degeneration).
She said they are also conducting eye screening camps under the aegis of ITDA (Integrated Tribal Development Agency) and extending surgical treatment to the tribal people living in the interior areas of Paderu and G. Madugula mandals.
Sankar Foundation has set up a 50-bed hospital in Srikakulam in November and in the first two month itself the new hospital performed nearly 600 cataract operations free of cost.
