Mumbai, May 30 Recently, MediSage—a global knowledge platform for doctors—in collaboration with the Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), Bengaluru, organised a webinar on 'Medico-Legal Practices'. The purpose of this event was to allow medical professionals from various specialities to participate and gain valuable insights. As a result, doctors from more than 10 specialities pan-India marked their presence at this one-of-a-kind informative and insightful session.

Through this captivating online event, doctors worldwide had the opportunity to participate and learn from esteemed experts, breaking free from geographical limitations. Meanwhile, the AMC, Bengaluru, diligently crafted highly engaging and insightful educational content, further enhancing the value of the webinar.

Abhishek Ghosh, Co-Founder and Director, Medisage, Stated, "I want to emphasise the profound connection between medicine and law. These two disciplines intertwine in the pursuit of justice and healing, exploring the delicate balance between medical expertise and legal principles. In our recent webinar, MediSage aimed at enhancing knowledge and understanding of ethical considerations within the legal system.

“Our goal is to safeguard patients' rights, support legal investigations and uphold the highest standards of healthcare professionalism. By participating in this webinar, attendees gained valuable knowledge to navigate the complexities of healthcare law. In this convergence of medicine and law, we find the intricacies of medico-legal practices.”

Dr Lalit Kapoor, a distinguished senior gastro surgeon and medico-legal expert from Mumbai, headed the session with an expert talk on 'How a consultant should respond if he receives a legal notice from the court/ advocate/or patient.' As part of routine clinical practice, doctors must abide by ethical and legal obligations and ensure they uphold the country's laws.

During the course of professional duties, doctors will inevitably encounter cases that fall under the category of a 'Medico-Legal Case' or an MLC. An MLC is a case of injury/illness that needs to be investigated by legal entities to fix responsibility for its cause. Therefore, it is imperative for all doctors to stay abreast of the current scenario of MLCs and possess the knowledge and skills necessary to handle such cases following the law of the land.

Dr Kapoor delivered an extensive presentation enriched with real-life instances and recent cases to educate the attending doctors about the diverse categories of notices, MLCs and appropriate approaches to deal with each of them. It was followed by a discussion on the guidelines that need to be followed and when to involve an advocate for the purpose. He concluded his session with a key takeaway message highlighting the significance of organisations like the AMC, which are pivotal in assisting physicians in India in effectively managing MLCs and providing them extensive support throughout the process.

Dr GV Divakar, president of the AMC, Bengaluru, played an instrumental role in organising the webinar to elevate the prominence of his organisation. He commenced by providing a comprehensive context and delivering a lecture emphasising the importance of maintaining a strong foundation in medico-legal expertise. Dr Divakar's contributions were instrumental in ensuring the success and relevance of the webinar.

The session was moderated by Dr Pooja Murthy, who introduced the Q&A session following Dr Kapoor's talk. With a resounding response from the audience, a veritable flood of questions from doctors across countries marked the Q&A session. Dr Kapoor and a panel of esteemed doctors from the AMC, Bengaluru, diligently addressed each query, providing comprehensive and insightful responses. Finally, Dr Ajith Kumar delivered the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of the session.
