Hyd airport hosts 5-day CBRN emergency training

Hyderabad: GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) said it is hosting a five-day training programme on Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Emergency Management, at the airport. The training is conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) till November 24, 2023. The programme will enhance the preparedness of Airport Emergency Handlers in responding to CBRN emergencies, covering potential threats involving Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear materials within airport environments.
The programme was inaugurated by Pradeep Panicker, CEO, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. The inaugural event was presided by D Sundar, Nodal officer, CBRN training, Consultant (Nuclear and Radiological), S K Ghosh, Senior Consultant, NDMA and senior officials from GHIAL. The training included lectures, field exercises, and live demonstrations, focusing on detection and decontamination procedures. In addition to equipping emergency handlers with the skills to manage CBRN emergencies, the programme aims to enable them to provide medical first aid and initial psycho-social support.
A GHIAL press release stated, “An airport operator plays a crucial role as the first responder in cases of hazardous material mishandling or spillage at the airport terminal. The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team are the key custodian for handling and mitigating any disaster situation at RGIA. Hence, these personnel are specially trained to manage dangerous goods.”
