Techie Atul Subhash's estranged wife and In-laws arrested for suicide abetment
Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash's estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, along with her mother and brother, have been arrested following a case of abetment to suicide. The Bengaluru City Police made the arrests after Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer, died by suicide on Monday, leaving behind a 24-page note and a video alleging harassment by his wife and her family.
Subhash’s wife, Nikita Singhania, was apprehended in Gurugram, while her mother, Nisha Singhania, and brother, Anurag Singhania, were detained in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The trio was taken into custody on Saturday and has since been placed in 14-day judicial custody.
Key Points:
Arrests: Subhash's estranged wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law were arrested following his suicide.
Suicide Note: Subhash left a detailed note and video accusing his wife and her family of harassment.
Legal Proceedings: The accused sought anticipatory bail from the Allahabad High Court but were subsequently arrested and sent to judicial custody.
Background:
Atul Subhash, originally from Bihar, worked for a private firm in Bengaluru. He reportedly faced severe emotional distress due to ongoing marital disputes and multiple legal battles initiated by his wife and her family. In his suicide note, Subhash claimed his wife had filed false cases against him and demanded substantial financial support, including Rs 2 lakh per month in maintenance for herself and their four-year-old son.
Subhash accused his wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law of continuous pressure for money and lavish gifts since early 2020. He also alleged that a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh was involved in causing him additional stress due to frequent travel for court trials.
Counter Allegations:
In 2022, Nikita filed a police complaint alleging that Subhash and his family harassed and assaulted her for dowry. She claimed that after their marriage in 2019, Subhash demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh as dowry and subjected her to physical abuse, treating their relationship "like a beast," according to reports from PTI.
Nikita and Subhash got married in 2019. While Subhash was based in Bengaluru, Nikita lived with their son in Delhi, where she worked for a multinational IT firm.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations and counter-allegations to ensure justice is served.
