In a landmark verdict, the Additional District Judge of Sealdah Court has found Sanjay Roy guilty in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The sentencing will take place on January 20, at 12:30 PM. Roy, who faced charges under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), vehemently denied the allegations, claiming he had been falsely implicated and suggesting the involvement of an IPS officer in the case.

The crime, which took place on August 9, involved the assault and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to the court, Roy entered the seminar room where the victim was resting and committed the crime.

Potential Punishment

The CBI's lawyer, Partha Sarathi Dutta, outlined that Roy could face severe consequences, including a 25-year jail term, life imprisonment, or the death penalty under the charges he has been convicted of.

Following the verdict, Roy expressed his frustration, alleging that the true perpetrators were being protected. "I have been falsely implicated. I have not done this. Those who have done so are being let go. One IPS officer is involved," he said. His defense team offered no cross-examination to substantiate these claims, which the victim's lawyers dismissed as a diversionary tactic.

Victim’s Family and Legal Team Seek Further Action

Advocate Rajdeep Haldar, representing the victim's family, stated that they might seek further investigation if the chargesheet or the verdict leaves questions unanswered. He emphasized that some critical points raised during oral arguments were reflected in the judgment but maintained that the fight for comprehensive justice continues.

Hospital Voices Demand for Justice

Junior doctor Aniket Mahato of RG Kar Medical College called for a thorough probe to ensure all involved culprits are held accountable. "Evidence was tampered with and destroyed, as noted in the CBI chargesheet. This can't just be about one person. Justice hasn’t been fully served; this is only the beginning," he asserted, urging authorities to uncover and prosecute all parties involved in the case.
