Kerala: 18-year-old woman dies by suicide a day before wedding; boyfriend attempts self-harm

An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram, Kerala, tragically dies by suicide just a day before her wedding. The young woman had been in a relationship with her 19-year-old neighbor, but her family had arranged an alternate marriage for her. Despite sharing her relationship with her family and expressing her wish to marry her boyfriend, her proposal was rejected. Overcome with distress, she took her own life by hanging herself on the terrace of her uncle's home, where she had been living since her father's death.

Her boyfriend, deeply affected by her death, attempted self-harm by cutting his wrist. He was rushed to Manjeri Medical College, where he is reported to be safe. Police have opened an investigation into the case, which is being treated as an unnatural death.

In an unrelated incident, an elderly couple in Odisha’s Jajpur district was found dead in their home, with police suspecting suicide. Their bodies were discovered after their son, unable to reach them by phone, asked a friend to visit the house. The couple’s cause of death is still under investigation, with a post-mortem report awaited.
