In 2019, Computer Science Corporation (CSC) found itself in a legal battle with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) over allegations of intellectual property theft and breach of contract. The dispute revolved around Transamerica, a major client of CSC, which had decided to migrate from CSC's Vantage software to TCS's BaNCS solution in 2018, securing a $2 billion contract.

CSC contended that TCS, in the process of transitioning, had gained unauthorized access to confidential information about Vantage, including its source code. TCS was accused of sharing this information with its development team, a move referred to as the "copy-paste saga." TCS argued that they were responding to routine queries from Transamerica regarding Vantage's calculations and that such actions were covered under the licensing agreement.

The legal battle mirrored a previous case where TCS was found guilty in the Epic Systems vs TCS lawsuit. In that instance, TCS employees had allegedly obtained unauthorized access to Epic's electronic health record software, leading to a $140 million damages award in favor of Epic.

In the case with Transamerica, a U.S. court jury ruled against TCS, ordering the company to pay $210 million in fines. The verdict highlighted TCS's accountability and the repercussions of its actions, emphasizing the strict stance of U.S. courts on intellectual property issues.

This incident, coupled with the previous lawsuit, underscored the potential risks and financial consequences for TCS in engaging in activities that violate intellectual property rights. The termination of the $2 billion contract between TCS and Transamerica further compounded the losses for TCS.

The narrative emphasizes the importance of respecting intellectual property and adhering to legal standards, especially when dealing with sensitive information and global clients.
