Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is scheduled to visit India on February 7 and 8, focusing on the theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its opportunities. The visit underscores Microsoft's commitment to leveraging technology for expanding opportunities in the country, according to an internal email from Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia.

The visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with tech leaders, including Nadella, in June 2023, where discussions centered around harnessing the power of technology, particularly AI, to enhance the lives of Indians. Microsoft expressed its deep commitment to India's vibrant developer and startup ecosystem.

During Nadella's last official visit to India a year ago, he engaged with key customers, startups, developers, non-profit organizations, and students. This year's visit will specifically focus on AI, considering its transformative role in shaping India's technology landscape.

Sources indicate that founders of prominent AI startups, including Lightspeed and Peak XV-backed Sarvam, Bhavish Aggarwal's AI startup Krutrim, and several early-stage AI startups, are expected to meet Nadella during his visit to Mumbai and Bangalore.

Microsoft has been actively involved in AI developments, particularly through its partnership with OpenAI. In October 2023, Nadella outlined the company's significant plans for AI following its collaboration with OpenAI. Microsoft has integrated OpenAI's GPT-4 technology into its Office 365 apps, introducing a new AI assistant named Copilot. This technology is also employed in ChatGPT, Bing AI, and other services.

Further strengthening its ties with OpenAI, Microsoft integrated the Bing search engine into ChatGPT in May 2023, directly competing with Google. In a surprising development on November 17, 2023, OpenAI's board dismissed its CEO, Altman, accusing him of inconsistent communication. Subsequently, Nadella announced that Altman and other OpenAI employees would join Microsoft's new advanced AI research team, with Altman serving as the CEO of the team.

With the increasing adoption of AI, Microsoft anticipates a nearly 15 percent rise in revenues for its 2024 fiscal year, outpacing the overall tech sector, according to data from Bloomberg Intelligence. Nadella's visit to India further underscores the company's commitment to exploring and advancing AI opportunities in the region.
