The Microsoft Vice President of Product, Amit Fulay, shared his experience of facing rejections from major tech companies, including Google and Facebook, in a recent LinkedIn post. Despite being rejected by Microsoft for a summer internship while in school, Fulay eventually joined the tech giant in September 2021. However, his journey involved notable setbacks, including 13 interviews over two rounds at Google, resulting in rejection. A year later, Google reopened his application, but an abbreviated interview due to the VP of Search being sick led to another rejection. Facebook (now Meta) also turned him down, citing a lack of sufficient 'social' experience during its early days.
Interestingly, Fulay revealed that right before joining Microsoft, he received an offer from Twitter (now known as X) for a 'completely different' role. Despite the initial setbacks, he later worked at both Google and Facebook for 7 years and 5 months and 3 years and 9 months, respectively.
In light of his experiences, Fulay offered a 5-point guide for job seekers preparing for interviews:
Rejection is not final.
You are not alone in facing challenges.
Sometimes, one may not be deemed good enough.
Occasionally, circumstances may not align favorably.
It could always be considered a 'lucky miss,' emphasizing that rejection might lead to unforeseen opportunities.
