India’s agriculture industry has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, and with the rise of Agri-tech, the country’s talent pool is poised to make a significant impact on a global scale. In an exclusive interview with Bizz Buzz, Sudheera Sandbhor of FarmERP, discusses how India’s Agri-tech workforce is stepping up to meet global demands. From international collaborations to upskilling initiatives, Sandbhor shares valuable insights on fostering talent in this rapidly evolving sector

With India being a major player in agriculture, how do you see the country's talent competing at a global level in the Agri-tech sector? What strategies can be implemented to bridge any skill gaps?

India’s agri-tech talent is poised to compete on a global scale, thanks to its strong agricultural foundation and an increasingly tech-savvy workforce. However, bridging skill gaps is crucial to unlock this potential fully. Key strategies to achieve this include strengthening industry-academia partnerships to align curriculums with evolving sector demands, fostering continuous learning through certifications and hands-on workshops, and creating mentorship programs to provide real-world experience.

We support Agri-tech talent development by mentoring MBA students from Symbiosis College’s Agri Management program, offering insights into how ERP systems are transforming agriculture. Recently, we shared how FarmERP drives farming innovation, giving students exposure to emerging trends and technologies shaping the future of Agri-tech.

What role do international collaborations and partnerships play in the development of Indian talent in the Agri-tech sector, and how can these opportunities be expanded?

International collaborations are key to developing Indian talent in Agri-tech, providing access to global technologies and best practices that enhance skill sets and ensure competitiveness. To expand these opportunities, fostering partnerships between Indian Agri-tech firms, academic institutions, and international bodies is essential. Initiatives like cross-border internships, research collaborations, and knowledge exchanges can provide Indian professionals with valuable global exposure.

At FarmERP, we actively engage in these collaborations. Recently, we hosted nine scholars from Nuffield Australia, who brought insights on topics like regenerative agriculture and sustainable practices. By facilitating such partnerships, we contribute to bridging global expertise with local talent, driving innovation and sustainability in agriculture.

What role do up-skilling and reskilling play in ensuring that Indian talent remains relevant and competitive in the Agri-tech industry? Are there any specific programs or certifications you recommend?

As technology and methods advance, it's crucial for professionals to continuously update their knowledge and skills to keep pace with global standards and emerging practices. To support this, we focus on providing access to specialized programs and certifications in areas such as data analytics, precision agriculture, remote sensing, and farm management software. Certifications from recognized institutions, like those offering courses in digital agriculture or sustainability practices, can be particularly beneficial. We also encourage our team to pursue hands-on training in the latest Agri-tech tools and platforms, as well as soft skills development to enhance problem-solving and adaptability.

Additionally, internal mentorship programs and partnerships with Agri-tech institutes for continuing education can play a significant role in facilitating this ongoing learning. This ensures that our team stays competitive & also strengthen India’s overall impact and innovation in the global Agri-tech sector.

What initiatives can the Indian government or private sector take to better prepare the country’s talent pool for global opportunities in Agri-tech, especially in innovation, data science, and sustainability?

The government and private sector need to focus on fostering a blend of education, hands-on experience, and innovation. This can be achieved through curriculum upgrades that focus on cutting-edge skills like data science, sustainability, and innovation. By investing in upskilling programs, internships, and industry-academia collaborations, professionals can gain the exposure needed to compete globally.

FarmERP actively contributes to this by offering targeted training programs in Agri-tech, ensuring that talent is aligned with market needs. Our focus is on nurturing a workforce that is not just skilled but also equipped with a sustainability-driven mindset. Through strategic partnerships with educational institutions, we ensure our workforce development aligns with global trends while encouraging innovation within the sector. This approach will bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications, giving India's talent pool the edge it needs to thrive on the global stage.

How do Agri-tech companies ensure diversity and inclusion within their teams, especially when operating across multiple countries with different cultural dynamics?

Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of our operations. We actively embrace inclusive hiring practices and provide cross-cultural sensitivity training to ensure our teams reflect the diverse regions we operate in. With flexible workplace policies and an emphasis on multicultural collaboration, we create an environment where every individual feels valued. We track our diversity goals through technology, ensuring equitable growth opportunities for all employees. FarmERP promotes a globally inclusive workforce, encouraging cultural exchange and shared learning. Beyond internal initiatives, we engage with local communities to reflect diverse perspectives in every aspect of our operations.

How is the growing focus on sustainability and precision agriculture influencing the types of talent and expertise required in the Agri-tech sector?

As the industry shifts towards more sustainable practices, there is an increasing demand for professionals who possess a strong understanding of environmental science, agronomy, and sustainable farming techniques.

Moreover, precision agriculture relies heavily on data analytics, technology, and innovation. This necessitates expertise in data science, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS), as well as skills in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Professionals who can analyze large datasets to optimize farming practices and improve yield, while minimizing environmental impact are becoming increasingly essential.Additionally, there is a need for individuals who can bridge the gap between technology and agriculture. This includes roles in agricultural engineering, bioinformatics, and digital farming solutions, which require a combination of technical skills and agricultural knowledge.

How is the Indian Agri-tech sector addressing the talent shortage in emerging fields like Agri-data science, IoT in agriculture, and drone technology?

First, Industry stakeholders are collaborating with educational institutions to create specialized curricula and training programs, ensuring students acquire vital skills in data analytics, IoT applications, and drone technology. This partnership also emphasizes internships and hands-on projects, enabling students to gain practical experience, while addressing real-world Agri-tech challenges. In addition, many organizations are investing in upskilling and reskilling initiatives for their current workforce. These programs focus on equipping employees with the latest technological advancements and industry practices, effectively bridging the skills gap. Workshops, online courses, and certifications in data science, IoT technologies, and drone operations are increasingly popular among employees looking to enhance their expertise.

Government support further amplifies these efforts through initiatives like the Startup India program and various skill development missions, which facilitate innovation and attract talent to the Agri-tech sector
