"Poonam Gupta Steps In as RBI's New Deputy Governor Amid MPC Buzz"

Prof. Poonam Gupta, the Director-General of the NCAER, was appointed for the RBI Deputy Governor role by the government for a three-year term.

After MD Patra stepped down in January, the position of RBI Deputy Governor opened up.

As per news agency PTI, approval has been granted by the Cabinet Appointments Committee (ACC) for the appointment of Poonam Gupta as Deputy Governor of RBI for a term of three years after joining.

At present, Poonam Gupta the Michael Patra successor assumes the responsibility of Director General at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). Having been the largest Indian economic policy think tank, Poonam Gupta was also involved as a member in the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

Prior to joining NCAER in 2021, she held nearly two decades of service at the highest ranks in the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, DC. Besides being an Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), New Delhi, visiting faculty member, she has also taught at the Delhi School of Economics and had a brief stint in the University of Maryland, USA.

Before this, Gupta held chair professorship at the RBI chair at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and more significantly, was professor at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations.

She is a holder of a Master's and a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA, also a Master's in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. She was awarded the EXIM Bank prize in 1998 for PhD research in international economics.
