The long-standing demand for a 5-day work week by bank employees has reached a critical point. This demand, which has been debated for years, might soon see a resolution. Bank employees are pushing for banks to be open only from Monday to Friday, with holidays on all Saturdays and Sundays.

HIGHLIGHTS

Bank employees demand a 5-day work week.

Discussions ongoing between unions, IBA, and the government.

Possible adjustments to daily working hours if approved.

Current Banking Scenario

Under the existing system, banks operate six days a week, with holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays. This means banks remain open on the first and third Saturdays of the month. Employees, however, are advocating for eight holidays (two-day weekends) each month instead of six.

Proposed Changes

If the proposal is approved:

Banks will operate five days a week.

Daily banking hours will be extended by 40 minutes.

Opening time: 9:45 AM (instead of 10:00 AM).

Closing time: 5:30 PM.

Progress on Discussions

The matter has seen multiple rounds of talks between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), employee unions, and government officials. In March 2024, agreements were drafted between the IBA and banking unions. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Unions’ Stand

The All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) has expressed frustration over delays in implementing the decision. It has hinted at collective agitation involving all banking unions if the government does not act promptly.

Customer Impact

Despite these proposed changes, bank employees and unions assure that customer service will not be compromised. The extended working hours aim to ensure that customer needs are met efficiently even with reduced working days.

As December progresses, a decision is eagerly awaited. Whether the 5-day work week becomes a reality depends on government and RBI approval. Stay tuned for updates on this significant development in banking operations.
