Local quotas may be transformative
Need to address skill gaps through targeted training programs alongside quotas
While Karnataka’s situation may differ, in Andhra Pradesh, young entrepreneurs like myself face a talent shortage hindering our growth. Many of my fellow-founders, seeking better opportunities, have relocated. I, myself, had to move my startup, Cybercubes, to Himachal Pradesh. Local quotas could be a transformative solution. They provide graduates with a chance and incentivize talented individuals to stay in the state. By addressing skill gaps through targeted training programs alongside quotas, we can create a win-win for Andhra Pradesh businesses and our young workforce, fostering a thriving economic environment.
The Congress government in Karnataka shocked the corporates by announcing reservations for local people in private jobs recently. But it went back on this after corporates including IT industry body Nasscom opposed it. But way back in 2019, the YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh enacted a law, reserving 75 per cent jobs in private sector to locals. But Nara Lokesh, the new IT Minister of AP, invited corporates from Bengaluru to come to Andhra Pradesh if they are not happy with local quota in Karnataka.
