Government's Subsidised Onion Sale Slashes Prices in Major Cities

The government’s subsidised onion sale, which began on September 5, has significantly lowered onion prices in several major cities.

Onions are now available at Rs 35 per kg via mobile vans and outlets run by NCCF and NAFED.

Price Reductions:

Delhi: From Rs 60 to Rs 55 per kg.

Mumbai: From Rs 61 to Rs 56 per kg.

Chennai: From Rs 65 to Rs 58 per kg.

Initially launched in Delhi and Mumbai, the scheme has now expanded to Chennai, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati.

Distribution has been enhanced through e-commerce platforms, Kendriya Bhandar, and Mother Dairy’s SAFAL stores.

The government is also rolling out wholesale onion sales in major cities and plans to extend the initiative to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and other state capitals. A strong logistics network supports the program, aiming to boost supply efficiency and cut post-harvest losses.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is closely tracking demand and price trends to ensure effective distribution.

With a buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes and increased kharif sowing, the government intends to stabilise prices and ease consumer burden.
