Bengaluru Many women employees in the IT sector have quit their jobs in the post-pandemic period as companies have stopped work from home (WFH) option, replacing it with hybrid mode.According to sources in the know, this trend is continuing despite IT firms’ best efforts to improve gender diversity in their workplaces. They also added that women employees may not see any special interventions in this regard given the subdued demand environment.
“Many women employees quit their jobs in the post-pandemic period as companies stopped work from home (WFH) option. This is still happening. Though this is not the primary reason, it seems to be an important reason. However, there are many companies which are providing work from anywhere option. So, this is a mixed trend,” Supaul Chanda, GlobalBusiness Head of talent engineering firm Otomeyt, told BizzBuzz.
IT major Tata Consultancy Services in its annual report has revealed that many female employees had left the company after the company stopped employees to work from home. TCS head of human resources, Milind Lakkad stated that although there may be additional causes, this seemed to be the primary one. He further stressed that the resignation of female employees was not motivated by discrimination. Generally speaking, women at TCS resign at a lower rate than males, he added. It has now surpassed that of men, nevertheless.
Sources in the know said that TCS had seen very high number of resignations of female employees in recent months.
“This trend is not limited to any specific company. All IT firms are witnessing such mass resignations in recent months. However, we don’t expect any special interventions from companies given that it has turned to a complete employer’s market owing to low demand,” said an industry source who wished not to be quoted.
Indian IT industry is one of the biggest employers of female employees in the country. According to industry body Nasscom, Indian IT and BPM (business process management) industry, around 1.3 million women employees, which is around 34 per cent of the total workforce. Moreover, above 24 per cent of women employees are at managerial positions.
During the Covid pandemic, all companies had stated that future operating model would be remote with some companies projecting only 30 per cent of staffers coming to offices at any point of time.
