Labour Ministry directs Karnataka to look into complaint of Infosys’ delay onboarding matter

Bengaluru, 5 September: The Labour Ministry has directed the Karnataka State Labour Commissioner’s Office to take appropriate action under the relevant labour laws about the complaint of Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) regarding the delayed onboarding of over 2,000 candidates by Infosys.

Reports suggested that the Labour Ministry in a letter dated September 3rd, has urged the Karnataka Labour Department to take appropriate action under respective labour law in this matter. "You are requested to look into this matter and take suitable action," the report said quoting the report.

IT union NITES last month had filed a complaint against Infosys to the Ministry of Labour over the delayed onboarding and “ongoing exploitation and unprofessional treatment” of over 2,000 young engineering graduates. These graduates were rolled out offer letters during 2022-23 placement season.

Meanwhile, Infosys has started sending joining dates to those engineering graduates who have been waiting to be onboarded for the last two years. The Bengaluru-based IT major has already sent more than 1,000 appointment letters to freshers. After more than 2 years of delay, these engineering graduates will be joining on October 7, 2024.

The delay in onboarding of freshers has been an industry-wise issue in the last two years with many IT firms deferring the joining dates amid tepid demand.

During the first quarter earnings conferences, management of many companies have said that they would start onboarding those people, who have been waiting to join their companies.

As IT companies are witnessing an uptick in demand with their employee utilisation rates touching optimum level, these firms are planning to increase their overall hiring of freshers in the coming quarters.

The top four IT companies are planning to hire more than 70,000 freshers through campus placement in the current fiscal year.
