Taj Banjara Seized: GHMC Seals Hotel Over ₹1.5 Crore Property Tax Arrears

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) seized the iconic Taj Banjara hotel on Thursday evening due to unpaid property tax arrears of ₹1.5 crore. Despite multiple notices, the hotel management failed to respond, leading to the sealing of the property.
GHMC Cracks Down on Property Tax Defaulters
Taj Banjara, previously operated through a partnership between GVK Group and Taj Hotels, faced management issues following the expiration of their contract. The hotel had outstanding property tax dues of ₹1.43 crore, with GHMC issuing multiple warnings over the past two years.
Officials revealed that GHMC has a total of ₹9,800 crore in pending dues, with only 13 lakh of the 19.58 lakh taxpayers in Hyderabad clearing their property taxes. In the previous financial year, GHMC collected ₹1,900 crore, setting a ₹2,000 crore target for this year. However, with only ₹1,450 crore collected so far, authorities have intensified their tax collection efforts, targeting high-profile defaulters like Taj Banjara.
The seizure operation was led by Jubilee Hills AMC Srinivasa Rao as part of GHMC’s aggressive tax recovery drive before the financial year ends.
