Vehicular congestion on Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) has continued to rise, prompting authorities to implement measures to manage increasing traffic flow. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has undertaken a key infrastructure project aimed at reducing congestion by constructing a new exit ramp near the Nanakramguda Interchange.
As one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions, Hyderabad has seen significant growth in vehicle numbers, contributing to increased pressure on the ORR. The newly developed exit ramp is nearing completion, with officials stating that it is expected to be operational by March. The initiative follows directives from the Cyberabad Traffic Police to alleviate bottlenecks and improve vehicular movement.
The ORR, a crucial 158-kilometer expressway encircling Hyderabad, was developed to enhance connectivity between the city and its outskirts. However, rapid urban expansion and the growing number of vehicles have led to persistent congestion at several key points along the corridor. The Nanakramguda area, a vital link to the Financial District, Gachibowli, and other commercial hubs, has particularly witnessed an increase in traffic volume.
The newly constructed exit aims to ease congestion along the stretch from Gachibowli to Narsingi. Officials anticipate that the additional ramp will enhance traffic flow and provide relief to commuters traveling toward Kokapet and beyond. With construction nearly 90 per cent complete, the project is in its final stages, and authorities are making final preparations for its opening.
The Nanakramguda Interchange, which was inaugurated in July 2023, has already played a significant role in improving connectivity. The interchange provides direct access to key locations such as Manchirevula and Gandipet while facilitating faster transit to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Hyderabad’s IT corridor.
The ORR has been instrumental in Hyderabad’s urban development, offering improved transportation options and reducing travel time for commuters. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 8,898 crore and completed in December 2012, the highway has become a major arterial route in Telangana’s capital. However, as traffic density continues to rise, authorities are continuously implementing measures to optimize traffic flow.
Officials expect that the new exit will contribute significantly to decongesting the ORR, particularly in high-traffic zones, ensuring smoother movement for thousands of daily commuters.
