HMDA expands to 10,472 Sq. km, plans major infrastructure upgrades

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is set to expand its jurisdiction from 7,257 square kilometers to 10,472.71 square kilometers, covering 11 districts instead of the previous seven. The decision was approved by the state Cabinet, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, on Thursday.
According to officials, HMDA’s expansion will extend in all directions, with a revised map currently in progress. However, the jurisdiction will not extend directly to the Regional Ring Road (RRR) due to the exclusion of 36 villages, which have now been placed under the newly formed Future City Development Authority (FCDA). The merger of several villages on the city's periphery into HMDA is expected to boost infrastructure development and enhance connectivity with Greater Hyderabad.
Major Infrastructure Developments Planned
HMDA has proposed four key projects to improve connectivity between the city and the RRR, some of which will be supported by the Metro Rail expansion.
One of the major projects includes the construction of a greenfield radial road linking the Outer Ring Road (ORR) at Raviryal (Tata Interchange) to the RRR at Amangal (Ratan Tata Road). This project, to be executed by Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), will be developed in phases.
Phase I: The road will connect Raviryal to Meerkhanpet.
Phase II: It will extend from Meerkhanpet to the RRR at Amangal.
Additionally, HMDA is working on another major HGCL project involving the construction of four-lane approach ramps to road underbridges (RoBs) near the Kollur interchange railway crossing. These RoBs are currently being built by the South Central Railway (SCR) on the ORR service road.
Focus on Radial Roads and Land Acquisition
Efforts are also being intensified to acquire land for the RRR. HMDA officials stated that government land will be utilized for the development of radial roads, further improving connectivity between the ORR and the RRR.
With these infrastructure upgrades, the expansion of HMDA is expected to accelerate urban development, improve transportation networks, and strengthen the overall connectivity of Hyderabad’s metropolitan region.
