Hyderabad: Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari on Friday held a review meeting with the senior officials on the prevention of traffic jams caused by sudden torrential rains in Greater Hyderabad. The meeting also discussed immediate measures to be taken to prevent stagnation and permanent preventive measures.

The meeting held as per the instructions of the Chief Minister was attended by DGP Ravi Gupta, DG Disaster Management and Fire Services Nagi Reddy, Principal Secretary Municipal Administration Department Dana Kishore, GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose, Water Board MD Sudarshan Reddy, and Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Rachakonda Police Commissioners.

CS said that the residents of the city are facing severe problems due to heavy rains and ordered the officials to prepare an action plan on the measures to be taken immediately to prevent and completely reduce them. She advised to immediately send the weather forecast to the concerned officials and WhatsApp groups of the civil societies and inform them about the precautions to be taken from time to time.

She emphasised the need to have a suitable system to provide information related to rains. Around 134 areas in the city have been identified as vulnerable locations. She asked the officials to suggest measures to be taken to prevent stagnation in these areas. A committee comprising the officials of GHMC, water board, Police, SPDCL and other departments should inspect these water logging points and make appropriate suggestions for their prevention.

She said that in order to store rain water in the city, large standard water storage tanks are being constructed in several areas, of which the construction of three tanks is already in progress. Santhi Kumari asked to suggest steps to be taken to further strengthen the Disaster Response Unit under GHMC. GHMC officials have been directed to provide additional cranes to remove vehicles in congested areas of the city, mainly Cyberabad, if they break down on the roads.
