A fresh outbreak of avian influenza has been confirmed in Abdullahpurmet mandal of Rangareddy district, Telangana, resulting in the death of thousands of chickens at a local poultry farm.
Veterinary and animal husbandry officials, acting on reports of unusual bird mortality, had collected biological samples from the affected flock earlier this week. Lab test results have now verified the presence of bird flu virus, prompting urgent containment measures.
The farm, which sustained losses estimated in crores of rupees, has been left devastated. In response to the large-scale deaths, the owners have been forced to carry out mass disposal of carcasses. Earthmovers were deployed to dig deep pits within the premises for immediate burial of the infected birds under supervision.
Authorities have imposed strict biosecurity protocols in and around the affected zone. As part of the emergency measures, officials have prohibited the sale and movement of poultry products, including chicken and eggs, from the outbreak site and its surroundings. Surveillance has been intensified across nearby poultry units to prevent further spread.
The state’s animal husbandry department is coordinating with district administration and health officials to monitor the situation and trace any secondary sources of infection. Teams are also spreading awareness among farmers and workers about hygiene and preventive steps.
No human infections have been reported so far. However, the health department has placed local medical units on alert as a precautionary measure.
