Hyderabad: US-based biotechnology company, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, on Wednesday entered an agreement with the Telangana government for setting up a bioprocess design centre at Genome Valley, a cluster for Life Sciences R&D and manufacturing, here.

The company signed an MoU in the presence of IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu at the at the minister’s office in the State Secretariat. The design centre will have over 10,000 sft space and is likely to become fully operational in the first quarter of 2025, the IT minister announced.

Highlighting the company’s achievements, Sridhar Babu noted that Thermo Fisher Scientific played a critical role during Covid-19 pandemic by producing emergency test kits that earned FDA recognition. The company also supplied reagents and lab chemicals to Pfizer and Moderna for manufacturing their Covid-19 vaccines. Thermo Fisher primarily caters to the pharmaceutical industry and diagnostic testing by providing essential equipment and chemicals.

The Minister emphasised that this new facility will benefit the local pharma and life sciences sectors in enhancing their capabilities. With 1,800 biopharma companies operating in the State, Telangana has become a key hub for pharmaceutical production and research in India, Sridhar Babu remarked.

The upcoming bioprocess design centre will feature state-of-the-art laboratories and advanced research facilities. Sridhar Babu pointed out that Telangana contributes 33 per cent to India’s exports in the pharma and life sciences sectors. He also mentioned that the skill university being set up in the State will provide skilled manpower to the industry. Currently, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is training 80 individuals, helping bridge the skill gap in the sector, he added.

The Minister also informed that the third phase of Genome Valley’s expansion is progressing swiftly, paving the way for more pharma and life sciences companies to establish operations. Additionally, a conference on Artificial Intelligence in pharma is scheduled to take place on November 18.
