Hyderabad: The State government has partnered with national institutions, including Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The collaboration will drive energy efficiency (EE) programmes in Telangana, such as Mission Life.

Under this initiative, the State had recently announced a MoU to establish Centre of Excellence in Energy Transition (CoEET), in Hyderabad. Led by BEE in partnership with TERI, the Centre will work towards combating climate change while enhancing energy efficiency and economic development.

After receiving copy of a special report on Mission Life from A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Media Adviser (Southern States/UTs), BEE, Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka stressed the urgent need to raise awareness about energy and water conservation.

He emphasised on public participation for achieving economic growth and protecting the planet for future generations.

“In the public interest, we are ready to collaborate with national organisations like BEE, EESL, the Ministry of Power, and the Ministry of Environment to enhance energy efficiency - a key contributor in combating climate change. With energy efficiency and renewable energy playing a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, initiatives like Mission Life are essential for a cleaner, greener future,” the deputy Chief Minister said.

Mission Life has outlined 75 individual actions that can be adopted by individuals, communities, and institutions. These actions, covered under seven thematic areas, includes using LED bulbs, public transport, bicycles for short commutes, CNG/EV vehicles, carpooling, solar energy solutions, and others.

With industrial growth and increasing economic activity, Telangana’s peak power demand is expected to double from 15,623 MW in FY 2024 to 31,809 MW by FY 2035, according to Central Electricity Authority. The State’s energy requirement is projected to rise from 85,644 MU in FY 2024 to 1, 50,040 MU by FY 2035. To meet this growing demand, the Telangana government has launched the Telangana Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025, with a vision to increase the State’s renewable energy capacity by 20,000 MW by 2030, and 40,000 MW by 2035. The policy will be in effect for the next 10 years.

Further strengthening its commitment to sustainability, the Telangana government, through TGREDCO, is also focusing on expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, targeting an additional 12,000 EV charging stations by 2035. Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka noted that these energy efficiency efforts are expected to save over 20 to 25 per cent of energy consumption.

V Aneela, VC and MD, TGREDCO, spoke about the impact of State and BEE programmes like Energy Conservation Building Code, Perform Achieve and Trade and Demand side Management.
