Telangana Assembly unanimously calls for Bharat Ratna for Manmohan Singh
In a display of unity across party lines, the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The session began at 10 am with Speaker G Prasad Kumar convening the Assembly. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy moved a motion to condole the death of Singh and to express gratitude for his pivotal role in the formation of Telangana state in 2014.
Following discussions, the House passed the resolution with unanimous support. The Assembly also observed a two-minute silence to honor the late leader.
Notably, Leader of Opposition K Chandrasekhar Rao was absent from the session.
Manmohan Singh, aged 92, and widely regarded as the architect of India's economic reforms, passed away at AIIMS in New Delhi on December 26. Revanth Reddy, while moving the resolution, remarked that Singh's demise is an "irreparable loss for the country".
