In the past 10 months alone, a staggering 2,66,509 cases of signal jumping have been registered within the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate limits. This was disclosed by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad, P. Viswa Prasad, on Wednesday while providing details of the first day of a special drive targeting helmet-less riders and wrong-way driving, which commenced on Tuesday.
Viswa Prasad also shared that over the last 15 days, Hyderabad police have booked 901 individuals for violations while driving private vehicles. He emphasised that private vehicles are not permitted to use sirens, which are reserved solely for police, ambulance, fire brigade, and RTA vehicles.
On Tuesday alone, the city police issued fines to 6,631 motorists for failing to wear helmets and 1,503 for driving on the wrong side of the road. Of the 6,631 helmet violations, 1,451 motorists were caught on the spot, while the remaining 5,180 were identified through surveillance cameras.
In an unusual gesture, some traffic officers handed out flowers to riders found without helmets. “My role is not just to penalise violators but to raise awareness about traffic safety. Giving chocolates or flowers and shaking hands sends a positive message—encouraging people to follow traffic rules and protect themselves,” Viswa Prasad explained.
Additionally, 1,503 drivers were penalised for wrong-way driving, with 177 caught directly by police and 1,326 penalised through non-contact enforcement methods. The traffic department also impounded 414 vehicles for exceeding speed limits. The speed limit on roads without dividers is set at 50 km/h, while roads with dividers have a speed limit of 60 km/h.
Challans will be sent to the registered vehicle owners for all violations, the Additional Commissioner confirmed.
