A recent Greenpeace report, *'SPARE THE AIR' 2nd Edition, reveals a significant rise in air pollution across Hyderabad, reaching hazardous levels in 2023.
Based on data from 14 air quality monitoring stations run by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB), PM2.5 concentrations in areas like Central University, New Malakpet, and Somajiguda were found to be five to six times above the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
In industrial zones like Bollaram and IDA Pashamylaram, levels were even more alarming, reaching seven to eight times the WHO standards.
PM10 concentrations also soared six to seven times higher than recommended in several areas, posing serious health risks.
The report highlights that while PM2.5 levels at some locations slightly exceeded National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), PM10 levels surpassed NAAQS limits at all sites.
The trends for 2023 show a consistent pattern of poor air quality, with both PM2.5 and PM10 levels exceeding safety standards for several months, raising concerns about the city’s environmental health.
