Hyderabad: In a major leap for research and innovation, BITS Pilani – Hyderabad Campus has unveiled the state-of-the-art Nalini Kurra Wind Tunnel Facility, aimed at revolutionising aerospace, automotive, and structural engineering.

The facility was inaugurated by Goutham Kurra, an alumnus of the institution (Batch of 1993-98) and co-founder of Wisq and Glint Kurra, whose generous contribution enabled the development of the wind tunnel, was the chief guest.

Designed entirely in-house, the wind tunnel facility is equipped to simulate and analyse airflow under diverse conditions. It will serve as a hub for advanced research in aerodynamics, renewable energy, and engineering, providing startups with the tools to test prototypes for drones, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. The facility will also enhance interdisciplinary learning and foster collaborations with leading organisations like DRDO and ISRO to strengthen India’s aerospace and defense capabilities.

Speaking at the launch, Goutham Kurra said, “BITS Pilani has been instrumental in shaping my journey. Contributing to this visionary project is my way of giving back to the institution that fueled my growth. I hope this facility inspires groundbreaking research and innovation in aerospace and quantum physics.”

Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani, emphasised the facility’s broader impact, stating, “The Nalini Kurra Wind Tunnel Facility reflects our unwavering dedication to research excellence. It symbolises our mission to create infrastructure that drives cutting-edge innovation and global impact.”

Prof. Soumyo Mukherji, Director of BITS Pilani – Hyderabad Campus, highlighted its role in fostering entrepreneurship. “This facility will be instrumental in developing innovative startups, empowering students and faculty to address challenges in aerospace, automotive, and renewable energy sectors,” he remarked. Prof Arya Kumar, Dean of Alumni Relations, applauded the alumni's support. “Goutham Kurra’s generous contribution exemplifies the power of alumni in transforming academic institutions. This facility will inspire students and faculty to build deep-tech startups driven by purposeful research,” he said. With its ability to recreate varying wind speeds and environmental conditions, this new facility positions local campus as a leader in hands-on learning and industry collaboration.
