Venkatesh Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder, continues to highlight the importance of education in shaping a well-rounded individual. In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Iyer stated that education has been integral to his life, even as he excels in cricket. “I encourage cricketers to broaden their knowledge beyond the game. Completing academic milestones such as graduation or post-graduation is invaluable. Currently, I’m working on my PhD. Soon, you’ll be addressing me as Dr. Venkatesh Iyer,” he shared.
Iyer's academic credentials are as impressive as his cricketing achievements. After earning an MBA in Finance in 2018, he received an offer from Deloitte, one of the Big Four accounting firms. However, he chose to stay in Indore and focus on his cricket career rather than relocating to Bengaluru for a corporate job.
Coming from a traditional middle-class family, Iyer was keen to convince his parents of his dedication to academics and cricket. “In our household, academics were highly prioritized. However, my parents also supported my cricketing dreams. To new players in the Madhya Pradesh team, I always ask, ‘Are you continuing your education?’ because knowledge will remain with you even after your cricketing days are over,” he remarked.
Venkatesh Iyer's performance during the IPL 2024 season—scoring 370 runs at an average of 46.25—earned him significant recognition. In the IPL 2025 mega auction, he was snapped up by KKR for an impressive Rs 23.75 crore following a heated bidding war with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Despite his success in cricket, Iyer believes in planning for life beyond the sport. “Cricketers have a shelf life. You need to be prepared for what comes next, and education is the best way to secure your future. It helps you think better and adapt to situations both on and off the field,” he said.
Iyer attrib utes his ability to make sound decisions on the field to his academic background. He believes that academics serve as a mental switch, helping him manage the pressures of the game.
