Retain Virat Kohli, release others: RP Singh's bold advice to RCB
Former Indian pacer RP Singh has offered the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) some unconventional advice regarding player retention for the upcoming IPL season. As the IPL governing council announced the new retention rules, teams are now faced with tough decisions ahead of the auction. According to Singh, RCB should retain only Virat Kohli and release all other players, aiming to reacquire them during the auction.
Kohli's Unquestionable Value
Virat Kohli, who clinched the Orange Cap last season, remains RCB's cornerstone. Despite the team’s inconsistent performance, resulting in a playoff exit after the Eliminator, Kohli's value and contribution to the franchise are undeniable. RP Singh emphasized that Kohli is the player around whom the team should be built.
Strategic Use of RTM
An IPL team can retain a total of six players using the retention or Right to Match (RTM) options. Singh suggests that RCB should use RTM wisely, particularly for players like Rajat Patidar, who had an impressive season. "I believe Rajat Patidar could be reacquired for less than 11 crores in the auction. Even if he approaches that amount, RCB can use the RTM to retain him," Singh explained.
Mohammed Siraj’s Market Value
Singh also commented on Mohammed Siraj, arguing that retaining him might not be cost-effective if his auction price soars. "Siraj’s performance will dictate his price, but I doubt it will reach 14 crores. RCB could re-sign him using the RTM if necessary," Singh said.
Building Around Kohli
Having played for RCB himself, Singh’s perspective carries weight. He insists that the franchise should rethink its strategy and focus on building the team around Kohli. "Virat has been pivotal for RCB. His contribution is immense, and his value is unmatched within the team," Singh remarked.
With the retention rules in place, RCB faces critical decisions. Following RP Singh's advice could mean significant changes, but the focus remains on leveraging Virat Kohli's unmatched value and strategically using the RTM option for other key players.
