Not Possible to Award Silver Medal to Vinesh Phogat: IOC President Thomas Bach
Phogat, who reached the final in the women’s 50 kg freestyle, was disqualified after failing a weight check.
Vinesh Phogat faced disqualification after failing a weight check.
Thomas Bach, IOC President, has confirmed that awarding two silver medals in the same weight category is not permitted.
This clarification follows the disqualification of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Phogat, who reached the final in the women’s 50 kg freestyle, was disqualified after failing a weight check.
Despite her achievement, Bach stressed that the IOC's rules do not allow for two silver medals in a single event.
He acknowledged the difficulties in enforcing weight regulations but emphasised that the rules set by the International Federation must be consistently followed.
The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) is reviewing Phogat’s appeal.
The IOC will abide by CAS's decision, and the International Federation will continue to enforce its regulations.
Phogat’s request for a joint silver medal, particularly after her semifinal win over Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, is still being discussed.
Following her disqualification, Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling.
