MS Dhoni returns as CSK captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out with elbow fracture

In a major development ahead of Chennai Super Kings’ upcoming clash with Kolkata Knight Riders, MS Dhoni is set to return as captain of the franchise after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a fractured elbow.
Confirming the news, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said, “Ruturaj Gaikwad is out of the IPL due to a fracture on his elbow. MS Dhoni will captain the team in the remaining games.”
Gaikwad, who was hit on his unprotected left elbow during CSK's match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati, sustained a hairline fracture. Despite the injury, he went on to play the next two matches against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, showing no visible discomfort. However, further assessments have now confirmed the fracture, forcing him out of the tournament.
“We’re obviously disappointed for Ruturaj. He tried his best to stay fit and continue playing, but unfortunately, he won’t be able to take part in the rest of the season,” added Fleming.
CSK also released an official statement shortly after:
“Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a hairline fracture in his left elbow.”
Gaikwad had been in decent form this season, scoring two half-centuries in five matches while batting at No. 3.
This is not the first time Dhoni has taken over the reins mid-season. In IPL 2022, he was reinstated as captain after a brief leadership stint by Ravindra Jadeja ended in a string of poor performances. The current season shows a similar trend, with CSK sitting at No. 9 on the points table after four consecutive losses.
With a decorated legacy that includes five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) and two Champions League T20 trophies, Dhoni’s return could be the spark CSK needs to revive their campaign.
