The ICC has announced the ODI Team of the Year 2024, and the absence of any Indian players has sparked a new debate among fans. Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka has been named the captain of the 11-member team. Notably, 10 of the players selected are from the subcontinent—four from Sri Lanka, three from Pakistan, three from Afghanistan, and one from the West Indies.
Why No Indian Players?
Cricket sources suggest that the reason for the absence of Indian players in the final XI is due to India's limited ODI participation last year. India played only three ODI matches and lost all of them.
With the focus on the T20 World Cup and the Test Championship, India played mostly T20 and Test matches. In the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, India failed to win a single match. Sri Lanka won the first two matches, and the third ended in a tie. Sports pundits argue that Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Pakistan had more opportunities to play ODI matches, which is why they dominated the final selection.
