D Gukesh Returns as World Chess Champion, Receives Heroic Welcome in Chennai
Dommaraju Gukesh, crowned the World Chess Champion at the 2024 World Chess Championship held in Singapore, arrived in Chennai on Monday to a grand reception. The 18-year-old prodigy, who defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China in the final, was greeted with cheers, traditional drum performances, and a jubilant crowd at Chennai Airport. Accompanying him was his father, Dr. Rajinikanth.
Gukesh’s victory has etched his name in the annals of Indian chess history, marking the first time an Indian player has claimed the world title since Viswanathan Anand. Leaders across the nation, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu, extended their congratulations, praising his determination and skill.
The young champion’s journey has become an inspiration for millions, with his perseverance and dedication resonating strongly with aspiring chess players. His historic triumph has ignited renewed interest in the sport across the country.
Reflecting on his journey, Gukesh shared a pivotal moment from his childhood that fueled his aspirations. He recalled attending the 2013 Chess World Championship in Chennai, where he watched Magnus Carlsen defeat Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand.
"That event was a turning point for me. Seeing Vishy Sir and Magnus Carlsen compete was surreal, and it left a lasting impression on me. The sight of the Indian flag at the venue was incredibly emotional. Although Anand's loss was heartbreaking, it planted a seed in me—I resolved to bring the world title to India one day," Gukesh said.
In recognition of his extraordinary achievement, Gukesh has been awarded a cash prize of Rs 11 crore. The Tamil Nadu government has also announced an additional reward of Rs 5 crore to honor his feat.
