UNESCO and Chile will co-host the 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference from May 2 to 4. In light of the current global environmental crisis, World Press Freedom Day will feature a deep dive into the significance of journalism, freedom of expression, and free speech.

It is also a day of introspection among media professionals regarding matters of professional ethics and press freedom, serving as a reminder to governments of the importance of upholding their pledge to press freedom. World Press Freedom Day is an equally significant occasion to show solidarity with the media, which have been singled out for efforts to restrict or eliminate press freedom. Additionally, journalists whose lives were lost in the pursuit of a story are commemorated on this day.

Policymakers, journalists, media representatives, activists, cybersecurity managers, and legal experts, among other pertinent parties, will convene on this day to deliberate on these matters and devise tangible remedies to counter the risks to press freedom and privacy posed by heightened surveillance.

History of International Press Freedom Day

The 3rd of May is observed annually to honour the foundational tenets of press freedom, to assess the state of press freedom globally, to safeguard the independence of the media against threats, and to honour journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated World Press Freedom Day, in accordance with a resolution passed at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991. This, in turn, was a reaction to an appeal made by African journalists who authored the pivotal Windhoek Declaration in 1991.

A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis

UNESCO campaign for #WorldPressFreedomDay:

‘’It is right that every story be told. But this one could prove to be especially decisive.

In addition to affecting ecosystems and the environment, the climate and biodiversity crisis are also impacting the lives of billions of people worldwide. Their narratives of turmoil and bereavement merit recognition and dissemination. Observing them is not always a pleasant experience. In fact, they may be upsetting. However, knowledge alone makes action feasible. The first step in resolving the crisis is to bring it to light.

The significance of journalists' roles is thus paramount. The dissemination of information regarding global affairs is made possible by their efforts, bravery, and determination. They are actively engaged in our collaborative effort to preserve the health of our planet and ensure that future generations can live. Let us honour and commemorate their efforts on this World Press Freedom Day, which has assisted us in shaping a better future.’’

Dis and Misinformation Around the Climate Crisis

Misinformation and disinformation campaigns in the context of the triple planetary crisis (climate change, biodiversity loss, and air pollution) threaten scientific research methods and knowledge. Scientific validity challenges present a significant impediment to a pluralistic and well-informed public discourse. In fact, deceptive and inaccurate information pertaining to climate change has the potential to, in certain instances, sow scepticism and doubt concerning the gravity and significance of environmental concerns, as well as impede global endeavours to resolve them.

As climate change tends to amplify pre-existing inequalities, public and political support for climate action, effective policies, and the protection of vulnerable communities impacted by climate change, including women and girls, may be eroded due to disinformation and misrepresentation regarding environmental issues.

In response to the proliferation of misinformation within the digital sphere, UNESCO issued the Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms in November 2023. Upon complete implementation, the Guidelines will provide all pertinent stakeholders with the authority to establish a governance framework that promotes freedom of expression while simultaneously addressing adverse externalities.
