World Food Day 2024: Why right food choices matter?
Despite the advancements and modernisation, food insecurity remains a significant challenge facing the world today. World Food Day serves as a poignant reminder to raise awareness about the persistent issue of hunger and foster food security.
Celebrated every year on October 16, the main highlight of this day is that food is a basic necessity and a fundamental human right for all. Various organizations centred around food security, including the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Programme, actively participate in the celebration of World Food Day, advocating healthy dietary practices.
History and significance
In November 1979, the Food and Agriculture Organisation's member countries established World Food Day at the organisation's 20th General Conference. However, 16 October 1981 was finalised for the observance of World Food Day. On 5 December 1980, the UN General Assembly sanctioned its approval and encouraged governments, international, national and local organizations to promote the celebration of World Food Day.
The motive behind World Food Day is to underscore the underlying issue of hunger and malnutrition. It serves as an opportunity to advocate and promote food security and sustainable agricultural practices. Above all, the day serves as a poignant reminder to encourage and adopt healthy dietary choices for the greater good.
2024 Theme
The theme for 2024 World Food Day is 'Right to foods for a better life and a better future.' This focuses on promoting the idea of healthy and nutritious consumption for a healthy future.
Given the demanding lifestyles of modern-day individuals, processed foods come in as a rescue, denying the necessary nutrition the body needs. This year's theme of World Food Day encourages healthy food intake rich in the right nutrients.
The essential role of a healthy diet
A healthy diet rich in the right nutrients is not only beneficial for the body but one's overall well-being as well. Balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains boost energy and aid metabolism. It reduces the likelihood of developing various dangerous diseases and supports immune function at the same time. In addition, it elevates the overall mood and enhances mental well-being.
This World Food Day, let us come together to adopt and advocate healthier food choices for a better life and sustainable future.
