J&K Accession Day is observed on October 26 every year. It is celebrated to commemorate the signing of the Instrument of Accession by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1947. This day marks the integration of Jammu and Kashmir into India.

It was declared a public holiday in 2020 and is celebrated by hoisting the Indian flag and reciting the national anthem. This marks an integral milestone in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.

Foundation of J&K Accession Day: A look back in past

The Indian subcontinent was split into nations, India and Pakistan, during the time of India's independence. In addition, 580 princely states submitted to the authority of British rule. These states were offered two choices, either to uphold their independence or become a part of India or Pakistan.

The last Dogra ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh initially decided to keep the state as an independent entity. Following this decision, Hari Singh signed various agreements with both India and Pakistan. This was done to hold the independence of Jammu and Kashmir. However, his decision did not turn out well. It made the state a victim of attacks from Pathan tribes and the Pakistan military.

To put the state out of misery, Hari Singh resorted to India. This decision was taken to keep enemies at bay. India agreed to help but in return demanded Hari Singh to sign the Instrument of Accession.

On October 26, 1947, the Instrument of Accession was signed between India and Jammu and Kashmir. The agreement was formally accepted by Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten. This granted India the decision-making authority over defense, external affairs, and communications concerning Jammu and Kashmir.

In 2020, October 26 was announced a public holiday. It was done to honour the historic moment. This agreement serves as a reflection of the unity between the two regions.
