The modern smartwatch is packed with impressive functionalities, from heart rate tracking to contactless payments and entertainment reminders. However, these high-tech marvels often lack elegance, particularly in the fitness tracker genre. The collaboration between Huckberry and Timex introduces a fresh perspective, offering a touch of late 1990s flair to workout attire for a reasonable price.

The recent collaboration, the Huckberry x Timex Ironman Flix Reissue, marks the first joint venture between the outdoor-focused retailer and the esteemed American watchmaker in the realm of digital timepieces. This release pays homage to one of Timex's most enduring creations: the '90s-era Timex Ironman Triathlon. Originally designed in collaboration with the grueling Ironman Triathlon race, which encompasses cycling, swimming, and running, this watch boasted durability, water resistance, a stopwatch, and multiple alarms—a practical suite of features for aspiring athletes. However, it achieved iconic status in 1991 with the introduction of its groundbreaking innovation: the Indiglo night light.

Three decades down the line, it's easy to forget the struggles of pre-backlit displays when a single feeble light source had to illuminate the entire watch face. Those who remember will attest to the frustration. Timex's innovation didn't stop at Indiglo; it later unveiled the Flix system. This feature not only illuminated the screen with its distinctive radioactive green glow but also did so automatically by detecting wrist movement—a concept akin to the functionalities of modern smartwatches. This remained invaluable, whether during a 26-mile run or not.

The Huckberry x Timex Ironman watch pays tribute to one of the most sophisticated Ironman models from the 1990s. Its black and yellow casing evokes memories of a Sony Sports Walkman, encompassing all the attributes that made the 1999 version an essential workout companion. Alongside the Flix, now rebranded as "Night-Mode," the Timex Ironman Flix Reissue boasts a chronograph with 100 lap memory, a countdown timer, dual time zones, five alarms, and even an 8-character memo pad. While it might not facilitate coffee payments or monitor heart rates, it proudly carries Timex's legacy and offers a fashionable, retro-infused alternative to the often uninspiring aesthetics of contemporary smartwatches.
