Heavy snowfall disrupts Manali and Solang Valley, leaving many stranded
Severe weather has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh's popular winter destinations, Manali and Solang Valley, leaving over 1,800 vehicles stranded due to heavy snowfall. Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) KD Sharma confirmed to news agency ANI that rescue operations were underway after more than 2,000 vehicles became stuck between Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel.
Traffic Chaos Amid Snowstorm
On Sunday, a massive traffic jam was reported near Nehru Kund on the route to Solang Valley, as vehicles struggled to navigate the snow-covered roads. Social media user Chlucky Tyagi shared a video on Instagram, filmed in the dark, showing a long line of cars trapped on the snowy Solang Valley-Atal Tunnel route. In his post, Tyagi urged fellow travelers to avoid the area, saying, “Manali and Solang Valley, koi bhi mat aana! (Do not come!)”
Rescue Efforts and Weather Conditions
Rescue teams have successfully evacuated nearly 1,800 vehicles, but around 200 heavy vehicles remain stuck. DSP KD Sharma assured that efforts were continuing to clear the remaining traffic.
The state’s meteorological department has reported that heavy snowfall and rain over the past two days have caused landslides and other hazards, particularly in Solang Valley. Light to moderate snowfall is expected to continue through December 29, followed by a brief dry spell on December 30 and 31. However, more snow and rain are forecasted to return to high-altitude areas on January 1.
Traveler's Warnings and Safety Concerns
The video shared by Tyagi, although not independently verified by HT, highlights the severe conditions and the prolonged delay, with some vehicles stuck since 10 am. Tyagi mentioned that even the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's vehicle was among those trapped.
Travelers are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and heed warnings to avoid visiting Manali and Solang Valley until conditions improve. Authorities are working diligently to manage the situation and ensure the safety of all stranded individuals.
