Xiaomi is gearing up to introduce generative AI (GenAI) user applications to its smartphones in India by the end of the financial year 2024-2025. This ambitious initiative will primarily focus on Xiaomi’s upper-mid range smartphones, typically priced around INR 40,000.

In a strategic move to democratize GenAI features—traditionally confined to premium smartphones—Xiaomi aims to bring advanced AI functionalities to a broader audience. This development follows the recent launch of the Xiaomi 14T and 14T Pro, both equipped with Google’s Gemini suite of GenAI features, such as an AI photo editor and a "circle to search" option.

These features, already present in Google's Pixel series, are now set to enhance Xiaomi’s lineup, giving the brand a competitive edge against other major players like Apple, Oppo, Samsung, and Google.

Sources revealed to Mint that this rollout could be a response to Oppo's recent announcement of incorporating generative AI features across all its smartphones. By integrating GenAI, Xiaomi is poised to offer a robust alternative in the AI-driven smartphone market.

As of July, Xiaomi maintained its leadership in the Indian smartphone market, recording a 23% year-on-year growth in shipments, with Samsung trailing in third place, according to Counterpoint data.

However, Xiaomi's journey hasn't been without challenges. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) recently accused several smartphone brands, including Xiaomi and Samsung, of violating antitrust laws by collaborating with e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart for exclusive product launches. In response, Xiaomi has requested CCI to retract its report, citing the inclusion of sensitive company data, such as model-wise sales figures.

Looking ahead, Xiaomi India has expressed its ambitious goal to ship 700 million devices—including smartphones, televisions, tablets, and connected devices—over the next decade.

Inc42 has reached out to Xiaomi for comments on this development and will update the story accordingly.
