Market experts are forecasting a major disruption in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, spearheaded by India's largest telecom company, Reliance Jio. Under the leadership of Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Jio has unveiled a suite of AI offerings that could challenge the stronghold of established tech giants.

Transforming into a Deep Tech Company

Mukesh Ambani recently declared Reliance's transformation into a deep tech company, emphasizing AI as a pivotal moment in human evolution. This transformation is expected to catapult Reliance into a new era of hyper-growth, significantly increasing its value. Known for revolutionizing India’s telecommunications and OTT sectors with competitive pricing, Reliance aims to replicate its success in the AI domain. However, experts note that success in AI will require more than just competitive pricing; the timing and execution of Jio’s AI vision will be crucial.

Disrupting the Cloud Storage Market

Reliance Jio's introduction of 100GB free cloud storage is poised to disrupt the market dominance of Google One and Apple’s iCloud among Android and Apple users in India. This offer could force existing players to reduce their prices. Neil Shah of Counterpoint Research highlights that this is a significant proposition for average phone users in India, who often face challenges with paid storage upgrades. However, integrating Jio Cloud with existing app ecosystems, which are predominantly backed up on iCloud and Google One, will be a significant hurdle.

Harnessing User Data for AI Training

Jio's strategy extends beyond data storage. By promoting the adoption of Jio Cloud, the company can gather extensive user data essential for training its AI models. For instance, the new call recording and transcription feature could provide an authentic source of speech data in various Indian languages and dialects. Sameer Dhanrajani of AIQRATE and 3AI emphasizes that this approach could generate vast Indic datasets efficiently and ethically, with user consent.

Building an AI-Ready Data Centre

Reliance Jio has announced plans to construct a Gigawatt (GW) scale AI-ready data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, powered entirely by renewable energy. This centre is set to surpass the combined capacity of all existing data centres in India. However, the project, which could cost up to ₹25,000 crore, may take up to three years to become operational. Running AI data centres on renewable energy poses significant challenges, as AI servers consume substantially more power and cooling.

Competing with Global Hyperscalers

Reliance will need strategic partnerships with global AI leaders like OpenAI, Meta, and Google to host their models and compete with hyperscalers such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Rajiv Ranjan of IDC India notes that Reliance must also offer competitive pricing, robust tools, security systems, and integration capabilities.

A Positive Outlook for Enterprises

The Indian public cloud market is projected to reach $26.1 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 28.5% over five years. As Indian IT leaders increasingly distribute workloads across multiple cloud providers, Reliance's entry as a cloud player offers a promising alternative to global giants. Anushree Verma of Gartner suggests that a domestic competitor like Jio could greatly benefit enterprises looking for diversification in their cloud strategies.

Reliance Jio's ambitious AI strategy has the potential to significantly disrupt the tech landscape, challenging the dominance of established global players and providing new opportunities for innovation and growth in India's tech ecosystem.
