The Chandipura virus has sparked panic in Gujarat following reported deaths in Aravalli district. To date, a total of six deaths have been reported in the state.

Amid rising number of death reports, Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has asked people not to be scared and remain cautious. He also suggested people to see a doctor if they experience symptoms like fever, headache and diarrhoea.

What is Chandipura Virus?

It’s a rare pathogen that causes fever, flu-like symptoms, and acute encephalitis (brain inflammation) in humans, and gets transmitted through sandflies, ticks, and mosquitoes.

Severity of Chandipura Virus

Research shows that the virus can lead to neurological issues and possibly deadly autoimmune encephalitis within the initial 24 hours of the illness. Past outbreak records suggest that mortality rates have climbed to as much as 56% to 75%.

Symptoms

Individuals who contract the Chandipura virus may experience symptoms like elevated body temperature, vomiting, intense headache, seizures, and diarrhoea.

Treatment and Prevention

Early detection, hospitalisation, and symptomatic care are essential in preventing fatalities caused by the Chandipura virus, as there is no specific treatment available.

A total of 50 teams have been mobilised by authorities to carry out extensive dusting operations in order to reduce mosquito populations. This is in addition to suggesting farmers to use insecticides and pesticides. Also, parents are advised to dress children in full-sleeved clothing to avoid mosquito bites.
